En dag att högtidlighålla

I dag är det 40 år sedan Martin Luther King mördades. Kanske hans minne bäst högtidlighålls genom att lyssna upprepade gånger på People get ready med Curtis Mayfields vokalgrupp The Impressions, en av de vackraste sånger som har spelats in; två minuter och trettiosex sekunder av komprimerat hopp.

För den amerikanska medborgarrättskampen blev People get ready, ett lågmält skrik efter anständighet i en djupt orättvis värld, något av rörelsens "nationalsång". En rörelse som i princip dog när Dr. King sköts på hotellbalkongen i Memphis Tennessee.

Mina ögon blir nästan alltid smått grumliga när jag hör People get ready, i dag finns än större anledning.
